Volunteers from Winslow Therapeutic Riding Center, the Warwick LEO Club,the National Honor Society,the Winslow Youth Council,and over 30 not for profit organi- zations,joined forces to make this 15th annual Duck Derby a splashing success. A Faux Duck Dinner and Concert held Sat.,May 14, to raise additional monies for Winslow,was sold out. Donations ofdesserts by Jean Claude’s,tablecloths by The Landmark Inn,and salads by the W.Rogowski Farm,were gratefully appreciated. Volunteers from the Warwick Lions,Warwick LEOs, Winslow Youth Council,and staffat Winslow,helped with setup,serving,and selling oftickets.The two bands, Oxford Depot and Zen,alternated playing while patrons enjoyed the hot wing dinner special. A huge crowd accompanied by the Duck Derby mascot,watched the myriad ofducks in the water.. Lon Tytell/The Warwick Valley Dispatch continued on page 3 School Board President Kurt Emmerich Retires By Nancy Owen After twelve years ofservice to the Warwick Valley Central School District,School Board President Kurt Emmerich will retire from the school board as ofJuly 1, 2005.When his youngest son was in kindergarten and after having served on two advisory committees (budget and facilities),Emmerich decided to run for the school board in 1993.At the time,neither the school board nor the administration had hometown resident representation and Emmerich believed that as a lifelong resident and the par- ent ofchildren in the school system,he could offer a lot to the board. Emmerich felt that the board needed his knowledge of the community and its history as a point ofreference.He has a close relationship to both,Village ofWarwick Mayor Michael Newhard and Town ofWarwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton,being that they graduated from Warwick Valley High School within two years ofeach other;this has made possible a cooperative effort with the schools,the Village and the Town. One contribution Emmerich made,as a result ofhis knowledge ofthe history ofthe area,was the purchase of 109 acres that now houses Sanfordville Elementary School. The property was purchased for $700,000 and still has room for additional growth in the school system,ifaddi- tional buildings are required.He was also responsible for its name,since the land was owned by the Sanford family.
